Lettuce Harvesting

Once about 50 percent of the yellow Lettuce flowers fell off I decided it was time to harvested the seeds, save them for next season and dig up the plants so I could plant something new.

Saving the seeds is really quite simple and all you'll need is a brown paper bag.

1) Cut the Lettuce heads off (you should leave a bit of the stalk)
2) Place them seed side down into the brown paper bags

3) Store in a cool dry place for 1-2 weeks

In a couple of days the pods will have completely opened up and will look something like this:

I think the seed look like little umbrellas. It's amazing how they were designed to take flight and spread themselves. Since this is my first time really saving seeds I'm relying on stuff like Seed Savers.org for their seed saving advice.

I'm going to put my in an envelope and would love to trade for them if anyone is interested.
